Tech Gadgets in a Special Ed Classroom

  • Headphones – I love the use of headphones in my classroom because I teach the younger students (early childhood grades) and earbuds do not fit into their eyes as well. My students actually asked me for headphones and explained to me how the earbuds keep falling out of their ears (I was so happy they were trying to verbalize their concerns to me! :)) Also, using headphones allows students to filter out noises in the classroom when they are working on their assignments.
  • Polaroid Camera – I use a polaroid camera to take physical photos of my students and the adults in the classroom to post on the bulletin boards or our class mood meter poster. At the end of the year or term, I send the photos home and my students love them! They told me many times that they keep the polaroid photos in their bedroom.
  • Electronic Sharpener – This is definitely a classic in the classroom! It is quick, simple, clean, and hassle-free. It also works well with colored pencils.
  • Laminating Machine (and sheets) – Every school should have their own laminating machine and sheets BUT I absolutely hate waiting in line to use it. I rather have my own laminating machine and sheets in my classroom. This works well for laminating smaller posters, flashcards,
  • Color Printer – Having a color printer definitely have its benefits over the classic black ink printer! My students love seeing images in color because they find them clearer and more interesting!
  • Ipad/Tablet/Laptop – This is a must-have tech gadget for all classrooms (regardless of grade)! I am personally a huge fan of the iPad (hence why I am an Apple Learning Coach! :)) There are many accessibility features on all these devices. You can use them for research purposes, submitting in assignments, publishing writing pieces, etc. After the COVID-19 pandemic, I find it increasingly harder to lay off the technology use in my classroom.
